Arthur Romero is the founder of Binary Exercise and Sports Training (BEAST), a non-profit organization that trains local kids in the San Gabriel Valley. Arthur recognized a lack of coaches who genuinely care about the kids and community. “One of the reasons I started BEAST is to bring people together and offer opportunities to the youth as far as sports training, sports development, and just being able to succeed in their respective sport overall. Because everything in sports translates to life,” Arthur explained.
“I had actually developed the idea for BEAST early on when I started as a freshman at the University of La Verne. I was really all over the place as far as what I wanted to do with it and how to take it to the next level,” Arthur said. By chance, Arthur introduced himself to University President Devorah Leiberman while walking on campus and asked for any resources to get his idea off the ground. Arthur was quickly connected with the University of La Verne SBDC and its Director Sean Snider.

One of the biggest challenges Arthur faced was having a singular location similar to an after-school program and not just a park. “What we really had to do early on was look at different parks, different high schools, and different locations that were willing to work with us and partner with us. To bring kids together and have a place they could call home,” Arthur explained. At a location, the kids would be able to work on their sports development and have the proper guidance in their training.
“Two things I found most valuable about the SBDC was first and foremost the online business plan program they have. They have an online website and you can go in there and fill out your business plan and it’s very detailed…It also helps you move forward, develops the plan, and figure out the finances, projections for sales, paying people, and all those different things,” said Arthur.
The SBDC has done a tremendous amount of work for me as far as putting me in the proper direction I need to go. They are not there to do all the work for you. They are more of ‘here let’s give you a guide and you can venture off and when you have questions just come one back’. It’s been great to have them.
The other valuable resource was the networking that came with Arthur’s initial conversation with University of La Verne President Lieberman and resources through SBDC Director Sean Snider. I’ve built a vast network on those two conversations alone. Networking is something that’s big, especially in today’s world with social media…Networking is huge and Sean showed me steps and how to communicate with people.”
With the help of the University of La Verne SBDC Arthur was able to form his corporation and file all the necessary licensing to get the organization started and was able to form a non-profit to benefit the local youth. BEAST trains between 30-90 kids throughout the year on and off-season for many different sports. BEAST was able to secure a sponsorship with Nutrishop that provided exercise supplies and equipment for many of the youth in the program.
